Introduction
The non-magnetic drill collar is made of a low-carbon high-chromium
manganese alloy steel. It is refined after strict chemical
composition and achieved its mechanical properties by forging. When
the magnetic field strength is 1 × 105 / 4π A / m, the relative
permeability μr≤1.010 of the non-magnetic drill collar. The
gradient of the magnetic induction intensity of the non-magnetic
drill collar at any interval of 100mm along the inner hole is
≤0.05μT.
Non-magnetic drill collars have unusual design requirements,
resulting in unique corrosion resistance issues. The drill collar
is the bottom part of the drill string. Its weight generates the
force on the drill bit to allow the drill bit to be drilled out.
The rigidity of the drill collar prevents the force transmission
from buckling. Traditional drill collars are made of alloy steel,
just like other parts of the drill string, their corrosion usually
does not cause any problems, except for their threaded connections.
A typical drill collar is 30 feet long and 4 to 9 inches in
diameter.
